Vitamin A
Vitamin A is an essential human nutrient. Vitamin A actually refers to a family of similarly shaped molecules: the retinoids. Its important
part is the retinyl group, which can be found in several forms. In foods of animal origin, the major form of vitamin A is an ester, primarily
retinyl palmitate, which is converted to an alcohol (retinol) in the small intestine. Vitamin A can also exist as an aldehyde (retinal), or
as an acid (retinoic acid). Precursors to the vitamin (provitamins) are present in foods of plant origin as some of the members of the
carotenoid family of compounds.
All forms of vitamin A have a Beta-ionone ring to which an isoprenoid chain is attached. This structure is essential for vitamin activity.
The orange pigment of carrot - Beta-carotene - can be represented as two connected retinyl groups. The retinyl group, when attached to a
specific protein, is the only primary light absorber in visual perception, and the compound name is related to the retina of the eye.
Vitamin A is a group of compounds that play an important role in vision, bone growth, reproduction, cell division, and cell differentiation
(in which a cell becomes part of the brain, muscle, lungs, blood, or other specialized tissue.) Vitamin A helps regulate the immune system,
which helps prevent or fight off infections by making white blood cells that destroy harmful bacteria and viruses. Vitamin A also may help
lymphocytes (a type of white blood cell) fight infections more effectively.
Vitamin A promotes healthy surface linings of the eyes and the respiratory, urinary, and intestinal tracts. When those linings break down,
it becomes easier for bacteria to enter the body and cause infection. Vitamin A also helps the skin and mucous membranes function as a
barrier to bacteria and viruses.
Abundant animal research indicates the importance of vitamin A to the production of testosterone. Vitamin A crosses the blood-testis barrier
in its alcohol form as retinol, where it is stored in the Sertoli cells and converted as needed to its more biologically active form,
retinoic acid. A human study comparing the dietary intakes of 155 pairs of male twins found a correlation between testosterone levels and
vitamin A intake.
The most compelling study is one that assigned 102 teenage boys with short stature and delayed puberty into four groups: a control, a
testosterone-supplemented group, a vitamin A- and iron-supplemented group, and a group that received both testosterone and the nutritional
supplementation. All treatments were effective in inducing growth and puberty, whereas the control group did not gain weight or begin puberty
in the same period of time.
This study suggests two things. The first is that the growth problems these boys experienced could have been avoided if their parents only had
known the importance of serving a meal with liver on a weekly basis, as liver is very rich in both vitamin A and iron. The second is that, with
equivalent hard work and dedication, athletes and body builders may be able to achieve similar results from their training by taking
high-vitamin cod liver oil and eating foods rich in vitamin A on a regular basis as others receive from the common practice of supplementing
with testosterone precursors.
Research in mice suggests that a vitamin A derivative, retinoic acid, may fight autoimmune and inflammatory diseases such as colitis or
rheumatoid arthritis, U.S. scientists say. A team at the La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology in California found that manipulating
the amount of retinoic acid (a substance derived when vitamin A is broken down in the body) in the mice affected levels of pro-inflammatory
T-cells. These T-cells are a type of white blood cell that plays a role in several inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.
