Vitamin C

Vitamin C or L-ascorbate is an essential nutrient for a large number of higher primate species and other animals. Humans are one of the few species who lack the enzyme to convert glucose to vitamin C.

The presence of ascorbate is required for a range of essential metabolic reactions in all animals and plants. It is made internally by almost all organisms, humans being the most well-known exception. It is widely known as the vitamin whose deficiency causes scurvy in humans. It is also widely used as a food additive. The pharmacophore of vitamin C is the ascorbate ion. In living organisms, ascorbate is an antioxidant, since it protects the body against oxidative stress, and is a cofactor in several vital enzymatic reactions.

Vitamin C participates in numerous biochemical reactions, suggesting that it is important for every body process from bone formation to scar tissue repair. Vitamin C is the major water-soluble antioxidant within the body. The vitamin readily donates electrons to break the chain reaction of lipid peroxidation.

Multiple studies have found blood and plasma levels of vitamin C to be diminished in those who exercise increasing their needs for Vitamin C. Athletes receiving a one-gram vitamin C supplement showed increased work capacity at a heart rate of 170 beats per minute. A daily intake between 100-300 mg of vitamin C may be warranted to meet the needs of all people who exercise. However, until an alternative RDI for athletes is established the recommended intake for vitamin C shall remain at 75 mg for women and 90 mg for men. Doses of 1500 milligrams or greater oversaturate the body pool and are excreted in the urine. Therefore, multiple large doses are not warranted.

Very low dietary vitamin C linked to higher RA risk
Persons with extremely low dietary intake of vitamin C are at increased risk for developing inflammatory polyarthritis (IP) within the next 2 years, Dr Deborah PM Symmons (University of Manchester, UK) and colleagues report in the July 2004 issue of the Annals of the Rheumatic Diseases.

Our study showed a threshold effect at 56-mg vitamin C a day. There is no value in increasing vitamin C above this level, and there is no evidence that vitamin C supplements can be used instead of an adequate dietary intake.

Excess Vitamin C May Worsen Osteoarthritis - Researchers Say Dietary Intake Should Not Be Above the RDA** Recommendation
It may be possible to get too much of a good thing when it comes to vitamin C and your health. Although heralded as a powerful antioxidant that fights everything from the common cold to cancer, a new study shows that over a long period of time high doses of vitamin C is associated with worsening of one of the most common forms of arthritis -- osteoarthritis of the knee.

The study showed long-term use of vitamin C supplements worsened the severity of osteoarthritis of the knee in guinea pigs. In these animals, osteoarthritis of the knees is similar to the cartilage damaging disease in humans, the authors write. Previous short-term studies in humans and guinea pigs have shown that vitamin C might protect against osteoarthritis of the knees. In contrast, this new study shows prolonged use of vitamin C supplements may aggravate osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis causes the progressive breakdown of joint cartilage -- a cushioning tissue layer that helps bone move against each other without causing friction and destruction of bone.

**Recommended Daily Allowance or RDA of Vitamin C is 3,000 mg per day
